The Cleveland Browns are struggling with a 1-5 record after six games, and after trading Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills, it seems they might be active at the trade deadline.
Naturally, Detroit Lions fans are exploring defensive trade options after Aidan Hutchinson’s injury.
Za’Darius Smith, a pass rusher for the Browns, has been a popular target, and when asked about joining the Lions, Smith admitted he’s focused on Cleveland but didn’t dismiss the idea of a trade to Detroit. He was open about how it could be a good opportunity for him.
“But if I was to go to Detroit, I would like it, because I get to play Green Bay twice a year and the Vikings twice a year,” Smith said to The Chronicle-Telegram. “That’ll be big.”
He added, “I’m staying positive, but now that you mention it, it might be a good fit for me.”
Smith’s connection to the Packers and Vikings—teams he played for—makes this prospect intriguing.
Though Smith’s performance has declined with age, he had 10 sacks just two years ago and made the Pro Bowl. Over his career, he has 63 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and 314 tackles. So far this season, he has 3.0 sacks, 10 pressures, and a 67.8 PFF grade with Cleveland.
Smith’s physical traits—6-foot-4, 275 pounds—fit the Lions’ preference for edge rushers who can convert speed to power, a vital part of Detroit’s defensive strategy.
Though the Lions are considering trade options, including discussions with the Jets about Haason Reddick, they are moving cautiously.
“We’re not in a hurry,” said coach Dan Campbell. “I believe in the guys here. I believe in the D-line. Doesn’t mean we’re not looking or evaluating. Brad (Holmes) is good at that, and we’ll make decisions as they come. But our eyes are open to what we need.”
