Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently provided an update on defensive end Josh Paschal’s injury status. Initially, Paschal was expected to return to practice around early September, but it now seems his comeback will be delayed. Campbell mentioned on Thursday that Paschal’s recovery is taking longer than anticipated, which could be a bit of a setback for the team.
Paschal is currently sidelined with an unspecified injury and is on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list. Earlier in training camp, Campbell revealed that Paschal had undergone a clean-out surgery, which pushed back his return timeline. Paschal was originally considered a candidate to be activated off the NFI list before the roster cuts next week, but the recent delay likely means he will stay on the list at the start of the season.
Campbell also noted that this delay simplifies the decision-making process regarding Paschal’s roster status, implying the defensive end won’t be available for practice or games for at least the first month of the season.
With Paschal sidelined, the Lions must rely on their top defensive ends: Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, and Al-Quadin Muhammad. Depth is further challenged by rookie Ahmed Hassanein, who suffered a pectoral injury during the preseason. This situation leaves players like Nate Lynn, Isaac Ukwu, and Mitchell Agude competing for depth roles, while veteran Za’Darius Smith remains unsigned and could potentially fill a spot.
