Hofstra transfer and reigning Coastal Athletic Association Player of the Year Cruz Davis has pledged to Texas Tech, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. Davis, a 6-foot-3 guard, has one year of eligibility left heading into the 2026-27 season.

Texas Tech general manager Kellen Buffington’s long-standing relationship with Davis has finally paid off.

Davis played this season for Hofstra, averaging 20. 1 points, 4. 7 assists, and 3. 7 rebounds per game. He showed that he can be a steady scorer. Davis made 44 percent of his field goal tries, with 40 percent coming from beyond the arc.

Texas Tech adds seasoned playmaker Davis

This season, Davis has played in all 35 games for the Pride, averaging double-figure scoring in 32 of them. He guided Hofstra to victory in the CAA Tournament, securing the Pride’s first NCAA Tournament berth in 25 years. Davis earned All-CAA First Team honors and was named the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Davis, a Plano native, began his collegiate career at Iona as head coach Rick Pitino’s assistant. As a freshman, he started seven games and received All-MAAC Rookie Team recognition in 2022-23. Davis followed Pitino after the legendary head coach accepted the St. John’s position.

Davis only played in four games with the Red Storm before missing the remainder of the season due to damage. His single season at St. John’s did not impact his eligibility.

Davis will join Texas Tech as his fourth university in five years, having spent the previous two seasons playing at Hofstra.

His greatest performance of the season was in a non-conference game against Pitt, a power conference opponent. Davis scored a career-high 36 points and seven assists against the Panthers. Five of his field goals were three-pointers.

Davis returns home to Texas after spending the previous several years in the northeast. According to Rivals, he finished his senior year of high school at Huntington Prep (WV) and was a three-star recruit.

Davis is an instant contributor for Texas Tech and is expected to have the ball in his hands frequently as a Red Raider.
