SEC team refuses to play Texas Tech after Brendan Sorsby ruling

On Monday, a judge issued a temporary restraining order against the NCAA, allowing Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby to play in the 2026 season despite admitting to gambling on sports, including 40 on his own club. The move immediately provoked uproar, with some teams now outright refusing to compete against Texas Tech.

Following the judgment, a number of athletic directors and conference commissioners spoke out against it, and at least one team issued an internal memo stating that it would not arrange games against Texas Tech in any sport for the foreseeable future.

Decision Sparks Outrage.

Following Monday’s ruling, high-ranking college football players voiced their outrage.

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips told ESPN that the decision is indicative of “a terrible trend that is eroding the integrity of our process. ” Meanwhile, the Big Ten is set to discuss a possible league-wide regulation to not schedule Texas Tech in any sport during the regular season. Even schools in the Big 12, where Texas Tech competes, have been discussing refusing to play Texas Tech.

TCU athletic director Mike Buddie and Kansas State AD Gene Taylor both told ESPN that they’ve discussed not playing Texas Tech.

We expect to have talks surrounding it, Buddie told ESPN. We are all looking forward to it, however, it has not been officially discussed.

Georgia refuses to play Texas Tech.
