The New York Jets are actively exploring the wide receiver market, and one name generating buzz is Detroit Lions wideout Tim Patrick.

According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, Patrick is worth monitoring since he has past connections with Jets defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, and general manager Darren Mougey, who worked with him during his Denver days.

Analysts Link Jets to Patrick

Eric Edholm of NFL Media recently listed Patrick among possible trade or release candidates.

Patrick, now 31, was a bright spot for Detroit in 2024, making a full return after back-to-back lost seasons due to injuries. He suited up in all 16 games, starting nine, while recording 33 catches, 394 yards, and three touchdowns. Still, with rookie Isaac TeSlaa breaking out, Patrick has slipped down the depth chart and could become expendable.

“If Detroit feels comfortable with its wide receiver depth, Patrick might be let go,” Edholm noted, suggesting that the Jets could be one of the first teams to pounce, given his reliability and blocking ability.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini also echoed Patrick’s name, reminding that he was on New York’s radar in March before ultimately signing a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Lions.

Why Patrick Makes Sense for New York

Patrick entered the league undrafted in 2017 out of Utah and eventually landed with the Denver Broncos, where he spent seven seasons. During his time in Denver, he logged 143 receptions, 2,009 yards, and 12 touchdowns, though his final two years were wiped out by a torn ACL and Achilles injury.

His 2024 move to Detroit reunited him with Glenn, while his familiarity with Engstrand gives him a leg up in understanding the Jets’ current offensive scheme.

Managing Expectations

While Patrick could offer depth, experience, and leadership, the Jets aren’t expecting him to be a game-changer. Garrett Wilson remains the team’s focal point, and New York is still hunting for a true complement to him.

Patrick wouldn’t fill that “Robin to Batman” role, but he could serve as a steady veteran presence. If the Lions release him or decide to trade, the Jets are a logical landing spot — provided fans keep expectations realistic.
