Detroit Lions fans received massive news when star center Frank Ragnow announced he was un-retiring just before the Thanksgiving clash with the Green Bay Packers. But despite his surprise return, Detroit will still be without him on Thanksgiving Day.

Frank Ragnow Won’t Play vs. Packers After Surprise Return

Even though Ragnow’s comeback created excitement across Detroit, the Lions have confirmed he will not suit up today.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the All-Pro center needs a short ramp-up period after being away from football for several months. With injuries to Christian Mahogany and Graham Glasgow, his return comes at the perfect time—just not soon enough for Week 13.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Ragnow is physically ready and closer to game shape than expected, but the Lions want to ease him back in safely. The center position requires physical conditioning, timing, and chemistry—especially with quarterback Jared Goff.

Why Frank Ragnow Can’t Play on Thanksgiving

Ragnow simply needs time:

Reconditioning after months away

Rebuilding chemistry with Goff

Adjusting to Dan Campbell’s new offensive structure after the change from Ben Johnson

Learning updated protections for Detroit’s O-line

Because of that, Detroit will rely on Trystan Colon or Kingsley Eguakun at center against the Packers.

When Will Frank Ragnow Return?

The Lions expect Ragnow back during a critical part of their playoff push.

Schefter reports that Week 15 vs. the Los Angeles Rams is the likely return date. That matchup features Matthew Stafford and the current NFC favorite—making Ragnow’s return even more important.

Detroit also faces the Cowboys, Vikings (twice), and Rams in the final stretch. With Ragnow back and Glasgow expected to return from injury later, the Lions should regain a much stronger interior offensive line than the one they opened the season with.

What Ragnow’s Return Means for the Lions

Stronger pass protection for Goff

More consistent run blocking

Stability at a position that struggled since his offseason retirement

A boost in confidence for a team fighting for NFC playoff positioning

Ragnow will help fix a problem he unintentionally created by retiring—but Detroit must stay patient as he ramps back up.
