Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell finally delivered the update fans had been waiting on regarding Brian Branch — and it came with equal parts optimism and disappointment.

Branch, Detroit’s versatile defensive back, tore his Achilles during last week’s victory over the Dallas Cowboys, abruptly ending his season. The 24-year-old had once again been one of the Lions’ most impactful defenders in 2025, and his loss hit a unit already stretched thin by injuries.

Campbell revealed Wednesday that Branch has already undergone surgery to repair the damage, and doctors were pleased with how the procedure went.

But the encouraging news stopped there.

According to Campbell, Branch faces an 8-to-12-month recovery window — a timeline that makes it highly likely he’ll miss part, or possibly a large portion, of the 2026 campaign.

The setback is especially difficult given Branch’s rapid rise since entering the league in 2023. Over his first three years, he stacked up 258 tackles, seven interceptions, 4.5 sacks, and 20 tackles for loss while lining up at safety, nickel, and hybrid roles in Aaron Glenn’s scheme. His breakout earned him a Pro Bowl selection in 2024, cementing him as one of Detroit’s most valuable defensive playmakers.

Now, the Lions must adjust to life without him for the long haul. With Kerby Joseph dealing with a knee issue and Terrion Arnold already sidelined for the season, Detroit’s secondary depth has never been more strained.

Still, Campbell’s message carried confidence: the organization expects Branch to return fully himself — or potentially even improved — once the rehabilitation process is complete.

The months ahead will focus on recovery, discipline, and big-picture planning. And when Branch eventually steps back onto the field, the Lions believe they’ll be getting back one of the NFL’s most complete young defenders.
