Ann Arbor is constantly changing. Additionally, Kyle Whittingham is still making changes to his recently acquired program.

Things had seemed to be perfect with the Michigan football program, but then there were minor disruptions when defensive line coach Lou Esposito left to join the Baltimore Ravens. That wasn’t Whittingham’s decision, but it did pave the way for further adjustments.

On Tuesday, the Wolverines seem to be undergoing a bit of an oil change in their behind-the-scenes operations, as On3’s Pete Nakos reports that Michigan is cutting ties with its general manager Sean Magee.

According to On3 sources, Michigan and new head coach Kyle Whittingham are breaking up with general manager Sean Magee. He was recruited as general manager in March 2024 and arrived in Ann Arbor after serving as the Chicago Bears’ chief of staff during the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

During the transition of Sherrone Moore’s dismissal and Whittingham’s appointment, Magee was essential in maintaining the Michigan roster. Despite losing 27 players overall, the Wolverines maintained a nucleus of returning players that puts Michigan in a strong position for the 2026 season.

Beyond what the aforementioned article discusses, Magee has played a key role in Michigan’s recruitment and retention efforts. He played a crucial role in enrolling players like Hassan Haskins, a running back, in 2017. Despite Bryce Underwood’s ties to LSU, he played a key role in bringing him to Ann Arbor. He was instrumental in maintaining the roster and signing class that Whittingham inherited.

It’s unclear from the public whether Whittingham is looking for a better fit for the post or whether it’s a matter of philosophical disagreement.
