Washington PG Zoom Diallo Commits to Kentucky Wildcats; Mark Pope Finally on the Board

Lexington, KY โ€“ The Mark Pope era at the University of Kentucky has officially landed its first high-profile high school recruit.

In a major shake-up to the 2025 recruiting class, four-star point guard Zoom Diallo (Tacoma, WA) announced his commitment to the Wildcats on Thursday, giving Pope his first verbal pledge since taking over the storied program in April.

Diallo, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound floor general out of Prolific Prep, chose Kentucky over a final list that included Gonzaga, USC, and Washington. His commitment ends a two-month drought for Pope, who had watched several blue-chip targets sign elsewhere while the new staff worked to re-establish Kentuckyโ€™s recruiting pipelines.

โ€œItโ€™s a new day in Lexington,โ€ Diallo told ESPN. โ€œCoach Pope didnโ€™t just recruit me; he showed me how I fit into a modern, positionless offense. Heโ€™s won a national title here as a player, and he knows what it takes. I want to be the guy who helps write the first chapter of his legacy.โ€

For Pope, who replaced Hall of Famer John Calipari after the latter departed for Arkansas, securing Diallo is a critical psychological victory. While Pope has successfully mined the transfer portal for veteran talent this summer, critics noted that he had yet to secure a traditional high school commitmentโ€”a cornerstone of Kentuckyโ€™s identity as โ€œLaunching Pad for the NBA.โ€

Diallo is known for his physical, downhill style of play, elite footwork in the mid-post, and defensive tenacity. He is currently ranked as the No. 33 overall prospect in the 2025 class by 247Sports, but his stock has risen dramatically after a standout summer on the EYBL circuit where he averaged 18 points and 6 assists.

โ€œHeโ€™s a throwback dog in a modern frame,โ€ said recruiting analyst Adam Finkelstein. โ€œHe gets to his spots, he draws contact, and he competes. Pope just handed him the keys to the offense.โ€

Dialloโ€™s commitment signals that Popeโ€”known for his offensive genius at BYUโ€”can still go toe-to-toe with the blue bloods for elite prep talent. As Diallo put it: โ€œThe Pope is on the board. And weโ€™re just getting started.โ€
