Washington PG Zoom Diallo Commits to Kentucky Wildcats; Mark Pope Finally on the Board
Lexington, KY โ The Mark Pope era at the University of Kentucky has officially landed its first high-profile high school recruit.
In a major shake-up to the 2025 recruiting class, four-star point guard Zoom Diallo (Tacoma, WA) announced his commitment to the Wildcats on Thursday, giving Pope his first verbal pledge since taking over the storied program in April.
Diallo, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound floor general out of Prolific Prep, chose Kentucky over a final list that included Gonzaga, USC, and Washington. His commitment ends a two-month drought for Pope, who had watched several blue-chip targets sign elsewhere while the new staff worked to re-establish Kentuckyโs recruiting pipelines.
โItโs a new day in Lexington,โ Diallo told ESPN. โCoach Pope didnโt just recruit me; he showed me how I fit into a modern, positionless offense. Heโs won a national title here as a player, and he knows what it takes. I want to be the guy who helps write the first chapter of his legacy.โ
For Pope, who replaced Hall of Famer John Calipari after the latter departed for Arkansas, securing Diallo is a critical psychological victory. While Pope has successfully mined the transfer portal for veteran talent this summer, critics noted that he had yet to secure a traditional high school commitmentโa cornerstone of Kentuckyโs identity as โLaunching Pad for the NBA.โ
Diallo is known for his physical, downhill style of play, elite footwork in the mid-post, and defensive tenacity. He is currently ranked as the No. 33 overall prospect in the 2025 class by 247Sports, but his stock has risen dramatically after a standout summer on the EYBL circuit where he averaged 18 points and 6 assists.
โHeโs a throwback dog in a modern frame,โ said recruiting analyst Adam Finkelstein. โHe gets to his spots, he draws contact, and he competes. Pope just handed him the keys to the offense.โ
Dialloโs commitment signals that Popeโknown for his offensive genius at BYUโcan still go toe-to-toe with the blue bloods for elite prep talent. As Diallo put it: โThe Pope is on the board. And weโre just getting started.โ
