This deal has the Chicago Bulls getting Ja Morant and moving up one place in the draught. That’s how much of an albatross Morant’s deal has gotten. The Memphis Grizzlies’ slide is essentially the cost of parting ways with Morant. However, in this specific case, it may not be a big deal. Each of the top four players has the ability to be a franchise cornerstone.
The deal would have the Bulls give three young players to Memphis in return for Morant’s massive deal, which would free up cap space for the team. Grizzlies executives must believe that moving down one spot will not make them look bad if they select the incorrect player here.
Why the Chicago Bulls and Ja Morant Would Like This
Morant desperately needs a fresh start after this season demonstrated that the Grizzlies have had enough of him. Both parties seemed eager to go on, but trade proposals were bad throughout the season. Morant’s worth is currently too low to justify a risky trade, and the Bulls may be able to capitalize on this.
Chicago would have the opportunity to select a franchise player while also bringing a new starting point guard. The Bulls’ squad has just two core franchise players: Matas Buzelis and Josh Giddey, and a forward is expected to be picked regardless of whether it is the third or fourth overall choice.
Morant will contribute to an exciting young squad eager to compete for a playoff berth, while Chicago will significantly improve its roster with a single step. In this scenario, the Bulls’ core of Buzelis, Giddey, Morant, and potentially Cameron Boozer would be the most thrilling the team has had in several years.
Why the Grizzlies Would Accept This Risk?
No club presented Memphis with an intriguing trade package when they traded Morant before the deadline. Morant’s injury history and drop in three-point shooting make him a hazardous acquisition for teams looking for him to return to form.
The Grizzlies would risk receiving a worse draft selection by trading Morant in this deal. Memphis must have faith in Caleb Wilson as a prospect if they traded down to likely pick him over the more renowned Boozer.
Patrick Williams and Rob Dillingham would provide the Grizzlies two prospects to begin their rebuild with a new squad. Memphis also acquired many picks after exchanging Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson, making it easier to take a chance. Getting rid of Morant’s deal enables them to put him in the past and avoid paying him $85 million over the following two seasons.
