The Detroit Lions have been busy reshaping their roster this offseason as they look to return to the playoffs after missing the postseason entirely in 2025. While the team still boasts plenty of talent, Detroit’s success in 2026 could depend on maximizing the impact of its top playmakers.
One of the Lions’ most notable offseason decisions was trading veteran running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans. Although Montgomery’s departure leaves a void, it also signals Detroit’s full commitment to star running back Jahmyr Gibbs as the centerpiece of its backfield.
According to NFL insider Mike Florio, that commitment should come with a lucrative new contract.
Mike Florio Believes Lions Should Extend Jahmyr Gibbs
The Lions raised eyebrows when they selected Gibbs with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, but the former Alabama standout has quickly justified the investment. Gibbs has earned Pro Bowl honors in each of his first three NFL seasons and has developed into one of the league’s most dynamic offensive weapons.
With Montgomery no longer on the roster, Gibbs enters the 2026 season as Detroit’s unquestioned lead running back.
After taking over as the primary starter in 2025, Gibbs delivered another outstanding campaign. He rushed for 1,223 yards and 13 touchdowns on 243 carries while also posting career-best receiving numbers with 77 catches, 616 receiving yards, and five touchdowns.
The Lions exercised Gibbs’ fifth-year option earlier this offseason, ensuring he remains under team control through at least the 2028 season. However, Florio believes Detroit should move quickly to secure its star running back with a long-term extension worth more than $20 million annually.
“At some point, you’ve gotta say, ‘I’m not taking the risk here. I want my contract.’ And his contract needs to start with a 2,” Florio said during a recent appearance on “PFT Live.”
Should Detroit Pay Jahmyr Gibbs Now?
While the Lions are under no immediate pressure to negotiate a new deal, Gibbs has already established himself as one of the NFL’s elite offensive playmakers. Locking him up long-term would provide stability for Detroit’s offense and reward one of the franchise’s most valuable players.
For now, there has been little public momentum regarding extension talks. With two years remaining on his current contract, the Lions can afford to be patient unless Gibbs decides to push for a new agreement.
Still, many around the league expect Gibbs to eventually land a market-setting contract. Given his production as both a runner and receiver, it would not be surprising to see him become one of the highest-paid running backs in NFL history when negotiations ultimately take place.
