Gibbs’ life took a dramatic turn while living at the shelter. Greg and Dusty Ross first met him after Dusty volunteered with the Family Promise program. Their relationship grew over time, and the couple officially adopted Gibbs when he was 15 years old.
By then, Greg and Dusty already had four sons—Max, John, Ahmaad Tanner, and Jahmyr. Ahmaad Tanner later played college football at Austin Peay State University, while Angela Willis remained a constant presence in Gibbs’ life even after the adoption.
The Ross family quickly realized Gibbs’ football future was bright when Georgia Tech running backs coach Tashard Choice reached out about recruiting the talented running back.

Gibbs began his college career at Georgia Tech before transferring to Alabama for the 2022 season. He rushed for 926 yards and seven touchdowns during his lone year with the Crimson Tide, solidifying his status as one of the nation’s top running back prospects.
The Lions selected him with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Although many questioned the selection after Detroit had signed David Montgomery in free agency, Gibbs quickly proved he was worth the investment.
