Ipswich Town must make major signings this summer if they are to avoid relegation from the Premier League, according to former England midfielder and Premier League legend Gareth Barry.

The Blues are preparing for their return to the top flight under new head coach Gary O’Neil, with the club’s primary objective for the 2026/27 Premier League season being survival.

After suffering relegation in the 2024/25 campaign under former manager Kieran McKenna, Ipswich are hoping a fresh start and a strengthened squad can help them establish themselves in the Premier League.

Barry, who enjoyed a record-breaking Premier League career with Aston Villa, Manchester City, Everton and West Bromwich Albion, believes losing McKenna is a significant setback.

«”They are in a better position with a season of experience under their belts. However, losing their manager is a massive blow. I felt Kieran McKenna would have been better placed to keep them up than Gary O’Neil,” Barry said.»

Despite his reservations, Barry acknowledged that O’Neil has already proved he can guide clubs to Premier League safety after successful spells with Bournemouth and Wolves.

However, he insists Ipswich’s current squad still lacks the quality needed to survive unless the club strengthens significantly in the transfer market.

«”It’s a huge job for Gary O’Neil. I can see them causing problems at home, but I fear they might go straight back down. He kept Bournemouth up, so he has the experience, but I’m not sure the squad is good enough without major signings.”»

Ipswich have already shown their ambition by completing the £24 million signing of Brazilian striker Emersonn, making him the club’s most expensive signing ever. Barry believes more high-quality additions will be needed if the Tractor Boys are to compete with established Premier League clubs.

With the new season fast approaching, the pressure is on Ipswich Town to strengthen their squad and prove they can avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

Do you agree with Gareth Barry? Can Gary O’Neil keep Ipswich Town in the Premier League, or do they need more major signings to survive? Share your thoughts in the comments.
