Ipswich Town have completed the signing of highly rated teenage midfielder Chris Atherton from Premier League side Chelsea, strengthening the club’s academy with one of the brightest young talents in British and Irish football.
The 17-year-old Republic of Ireland youth international arrives at Portman Road after spending a season in Chelsea’s academy, where he impressed with the club’s Under-17 and Under-18 teams. Atherton signed his first professional contract with the Blues in October after joining from Northern Ireland’s Glenavon in 2025.
Before his move to Chelsea, Atherton had already made a name for himself at Glenavon, featuring 32 times for the senior side despite his young age. He first grabbed national attention in September 2022 when he became the youngest senior footballer in United Kingdom history, making his debut at just 13 years and 329 days.
On the international stage, Atherton initially represented Northern Ireland at Under-16 and Under-17 levels, scoring once before switching his international allegiance to the Republic of Ireland earlier this year.
Speaking after completing his move to Ipswich Town, Atherton expressed his excitement about the next chapter of his career.
«”I’m delighted to be here and can’t wait to get started. I hope to offer a lot of creativity and attacking threat going forward while working as hard as possible to improve every day.”»
Ipswich Town Academy Manager Ben Chenery welcomed the youngster to the club, describing him as an exciting attacking talent with significant potential.
«”We are extremely pleased to announce the signing of Chris Atherton from Chelsea. Chris is an exciting attacking player we believe possesses big potential, and we look forward to helping him develop through the next stage of his career.”»
Atherton’s arrival highlights Ipswich Town’s continued commitment to recruiting and developing elite young talent, with the club hoping the creative midfielder can fulfil his enormous potential in the years ahead.
