The Stanley Cup Playoffs are a separate season. Everything is more magnified and deep. Whether it’s the play of key players, starting lineups, in-game choices, or something else, everything is scrutinized more closely.

After returning to Boston knotted 1-1 in their best-of-seven first-round Eastern Conference playoff series against the Buffalo Sabres, the Boston Bruins were seeking to capitalize on being at the TD Garden, where they had a lot of success in 2025-26.

Things didn’t go as planned, as the Black and Gold lost Games 3 and 4 in Boston and are now facing elimination on Tuesday night in Buffalo. It wasn’t so much that they lost; it was how they lost. Game 4 was a no-show in the most important game of the season. Very concerning. They are now 60 minutes away from a lengthy offseason.

Marco Sturm, the first-year head coach, has made one decision prior to Game 5 that should not surprise anyone.

Bruins coach Marco Sturm makes a significant choice before Game 5 against the Sabres.

Boston practiced at Warrior Ice Arena on Monday morning before catching a flight to Buffalo for Game 5. The Bruins would not practice on game day at Buffalo’s KeyBank Center, it was revealed on Monday night.

So, what’s the big deal? Well, the Black and Gold have some lineup questions, including the availability of forward Viktor Arvidsson, who exited Game 4 with an upper-body problem. Nikkita Zadorov also missed practice on Monday. Sturm stated that it was maintenance day for both players, but it is the playoffs. Practice absences are ambiguous.

What does all of this mean? Sturm will not reveal his squad until his pregame press conference at the KeyBank Center before the game, or when the Bruins take the ice for warm-ups. It is a part of the playoffs. You most likely have a notion of whether a player is playing or not, but Sturm is attempting to keep it secret for as long as possible. It most likely won’t matter, but it adds to the playoff experience.
