FRISCO: Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are still working to reach an agreement that would grant him a contract extension, which would almost certainly make him the highest-paid player in NFL history. That is according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, an NFL insider. She says that perhaps there is not a problem with the APY, which we previously mentioned might be worth up to $60 million. It is more about the years, she claims. Contrary to popular belief, the Cowboys are the ones who like to keep things brief, according to Russini. As stated by Russini on the Scoop City podcast: “As far as I can tell, the Dallas Cowboys’ willingness to commit to a certain number of years is the current holdup. Dak is expected to receive the highest salary possible; the Dallas Cowboys are aware of this.
“The question is, ‘Do they want to put themselves in a contractual situation where Dak stays in Dallas for more than two, three, or four years?'” And Dak is searching for that. Dallas should make a long-term commitment to him.The Dallas Cowboys’ belief is really what is holding us back here.” That is a fresh and significant wrinkle. Why would not the Cowboys want to sign their MVP quarterback to a long-term contract? Is there a chance that he does not think he can lead Dallas to the postseason and real Super Bowl contention? When Dak stated that “it is or if it isn’t” if a deal is not completed by this week (the Cowboys kick off the season at Cleveland on Sunday), was he implying to that?

Now that we know that it is ownership, Jerry and Stephen Jones, perhaps they will not want to commit to that “belief” in the 31-year-old over the course of four or five more years, even though they are believers in Prescott for the time being (there would be a huge void if he leaves via free agency after this season). “Is it sufficient that this individual has won a lot of games? For Jerry Jones, winning is insufficient. We are aware of this. They have higher goals,” Russini stated. “They don’t want to just be the team that wins a lot of games; they want to be the team that can play in the Super Bowl.”
A sustained dedication to Dak demonstrates trust that it will eventually transpire. Anything less than a sustained dedication implies… less faith.
