As the Detroit Lions push toward a playoff spot, head coach Dan Campbell is faced with one of the most challenging aspects of NFL leadership: making tough roster decisions. Recently, Campbell opened up about the difficulty of cutting players, particularly linebacker Kwon Alexander, whom the team had signed to provide depth during a rough stretch.
Navigating Roster Decisions “Yeah, it’s tough,” Campbell admitted, acknowledging the hard truths that come with managing a roster in the NFL. “That’s the brutal reality of this league. You bring in guys to help, and then when others get healthy, tough decisions have to be made.”
The Lions had brought Alexander in during a period when they needed additional linebacker support, and Campbell noted the delicate balancing act between roster adjustments and respecting players who had contributed to the team.

He’s all about football, loves it, studies it, and plays with intelligence. He never complains, he just puts in the work.”
Even though they had to part ways with Alexander, Campbell expressed openness to bringing him back in the future, possibly in a veteran role. “I still believe we’re going to need him before all is said and done,” Campbell added.
The Value of Trust and Earning a Spot Campbell also stressed the significance of trust in roster decisions, highlighting players like wide receiver Tom Kennedy, who have proven their worth and earned their place on the team. “Those guys have earned our trust and deserve to be here,” Campbell stated. “It’s not a favor; it’s about what they bring to the table, and we know they’ll be needed.”
He emphasized that his roster is built on merit, with players earning their positions through consistent effort and performance. “The guys we keep around and bring back—they’ve earned their spot,” Campbell said.
