Following what Detroit Lions fans hope will be the franchise’s first Super Bowl win, general manager Brad Holmes faces the challenge of retaining the team’s talented roster.

One key decision involves defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike, who underwhelmed in his first three seasons after being drafted in the second round in 2021 but turned things around in 2024. This breakout season has made him a valuable defensive asset and boosted his free-agency prospects.

After completing his four-year, $8.1 million rookie contract, Onwuzurike is projected by Isaac Zuniga of Last Word on Sports to secure a two-year, $20 million deal in free agency.

Zuniga suggests the Chicago Bears as a potential suitor, as Onwuzurike ranks among the best defensive tackles in pass-rush win rate and could strengthen Chicago’s defensive line.

Contract Projection: Two years, $20 million

Onwuzurike’s progress as a pass-rusher was evident in 2024, with a top-25 pass-rush win rate (11.2%), a career-high 1.5 sacks, and 45 pressures. He also improved against the run, earning a career-high 64.1 PFF grade.

The Lions are likely interested in retaining Onwuzurike for his depth, especially with uncertainty surrounding defensive lineman Alim McNeill, who tore his ACL and might miss the start of next season.

However, Detroit can’t guarantee Onwuzurike a starting role, as McNeill and D.J. Reader are expected to return. This limitation could lead Onwuzurike to explore teams offering starting opportunities and higher pay.
