The Detroit Lions are heading into a critical offseason, with general manager Brad Holmes focused on improving an already deep roster that fell short in the divisional round against the Washington Commanders.
Despite their disappointing end and the need to replace both coordinators—Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, who accepted head coaching roles—head coach Dan Campbell still has a promising foundation to build upon.
Holmes has excelled in the draft and free agency, including selecting edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson with the No. 2 overall pick in 2022. Hutchinson, who fractured his tibia and fibula in Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys, played only five games in 2024 but remains a dominant force and cornerstone for the franchise.
When healthy, Hutchinson is a game-changer with Hall-of-Fame potential. However, the Lions need another strong pass rusher alongside the 24-year-old. While Detroit has other priorities, Daniel Alameda of The Wright Way Network predicts Holmes may orchestrate a blockbuster trade for Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby.
The Lions aim to transition from playoff contenders to Super Bowl contenders. With Hutchinson injured, they acquired Za’Darius Smith at the trade deadline, but his contract only covers one more season, leaving a long-term gap at EDGE. Crosby’s gritty style would align perfectly with Detroit’s tough, resilient culture.
The challenge lies in whether the Lions would part with major assets for Crosby or trust Holmes to continue drafting top talent. Losing Johnson and Glenn heightens urgency during their Super Bowl window. Pairing Crosby with Hutchinson would form the NFL’s best pass-rushing duo and bolster their title chances.
However, trading for Crosby is unlikely for financial reasons. Crosby’s $94 million contract has multiple years remaining, and the Lions also need to extend Hutchinson. Adding another expensive pass rusher could strain the cap, especially with Smith still under contract.
Though difficult, acquiring Crosby would elevate Detroit’s pass rush. A four-time Pro Bowler, he has recorded three double-digit sack seasons since joining the NFL in 2019. His future with the Raiders is uncertain, as Crosby hinted at possible changes on his Jan. 8 podcast.
“Obviously, there are a lot of decisions to be made,” Crosby said. “I have to choose what’s best for me. We don’t know what the coach or front office will look like. There’s going to be a lot of changes.”
If Crosby becomes available, Detroit may struggle to finalize a deal—but there’s always a chance.
