The Detroit Lions are facing another challenge in their coaching staff, as another key member has left the team. After offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was hired as the new head coach for the Chicago Bears and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn was picked up by the New York Jets, another departure has been confirmed. J.T. Barrett, the Lions’ assistant quarterbacks coach for the past two years, hinted at his exit on social media. Although there hasn’t been a formal announcement from either Barrett or the Lions, Barrett changed his Instagram handle to “QB coach” and tagged the Bears, suggesting he would be joining their coaching staff. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune confirmed that Barrett will be the Bears’ new quarterbacks coach, following Johnson to Chicago.
In addition to Barrett, wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El is also following Johnson to the Bears, where he will take on a bigger role as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach. Randle El’s contributions to Detroit’s offense have been significant, helping players like Amon-Ra St. Brown become a two-time All-Pro and Pro Bowler, and aiding Jameson Williams in reaching over 1,000 yards in his first season.
With multiple openings on the coaching staff, the Lions could promote from within to fill the offensive coordinator role. Tanner Engstrand, the passing-game coordinator for the past two seasons, is reportedly a top candidate to take over for Johnson. Engstrand, who held the same position Johnson did before becoming offensive coordinator, is seen as a potential successor to continue the team’s strong offensive performance. Despite their impressive 15-win season, the Lions struggled offensively in their divisional playoff loss to the Washington Commanders, which has raised questions about the team’s future offensive execution.
