The Detroit Lions are currently looking for a new offensive coordinator to replace Ben Johnson, and an outside candidate has emerged as a potential fit. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, John Morton, the Denver Broncos’ passing game coordinator, has interviewed for the position. Morton, who was on the Lions’ staff in 2022 as a senior offensive assistant, is no stranger to Detroit. He also interviewed for the offensive coordinator job when Dan Campbell first took over as head coach in 2021.
Morton’s name was brought up by Campbell in 2022, when the head coach praised his contributions to the Lions’ offensive system. Campbell highlighted how Morton’s work the previous year helped shape the team’s offensive development and benefited Tanner Engstrand, the passing game coordinator.
Having worked in the NFL for several years, Morton brings a wealth of experience. Before his tenure with the Broncos, he had notable roles with the Oakland Raiders, New Orleans Saints, and San Francisco 49ers. He was also the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets in 2017. Morton’s deep connection with Campbell, stemming from their time together on the Saints’ staff, makes him a strong candidate to take over the Lions’ offensive playcalling duties.
Campbell has emphasized his desire to maintain continuity within the team’s offensive structure, and Morton’s familiarity with Detroit’s system makes him an ideal choice to keep things running smoothly.
