This offseason, the Indianapolis Colts have made a number of roster moves thus far, including the acquisition of a host of defensive depth players such as Arden Key, Cam Taylor-Britt, Micheal Clemons, Derrick Nnadi, and Akeem Davis-Gaither, among others, as well as the trade of franchise veteran linebacker Zaire Franklin to the Green Bay Packers.
The Colts were very active in free agency, but they also lost some important players, such Kwity Paye and Samson Ebukam, which contributed to the Colts’ defense looking very different heading into the upcoming season.
One of their free agents who left was safety Nick Cross, who played the previous four seasons in Indianapolis and then signed a two-year, $14 million deal with the Washington Commanders. He probably didn’t anticipate seeing the Colts in uniform again so quickly after leaving them, though. Now that the Colts have their schedule for the upcoming season, they are aware that Week 4 will see them play the Commanders in London, England, for some international football enjoyment. Having played NFL games in Frankfurt, Germany (2023), and Berlin (2025), the Colts are no strangers to traveling the Atlantic to play one, and neither is Cross.
The sole distinction this coming season is that Cross will be on the opposite side of the field from his previous club as they attempt to win their third straight victory, but not on American soil. Confronting his old teammates will be all about having fun and nothing else, but it will also be a transition from training battles to real game battles, according to Cross, who was just on Kay Adams’ show Up & Adams.
I mean, it will be nice, Cross stated. It’s unique. I feel that it’s preferable to compete against them in practice than in a real game. As a result, it will be interesting to watch. Cross’s performance for the Colts is what the Commanders are hoping for. Cross had four interceptions and five pass breakups over the previous two seasons as he grew into a consistent starter for the Colts.
He had 2. 5 sacks last year, which is twice as many as in any prior season, and he had a total of 159 tackles over the past two seasons, as opposed to 41 in his first two.
Cross will be anticipated to bring that same attitude and productivity to Washington, where he established a niche for himself at strong safety in 2024 and 2025. Cross has only positive things to say about his time with the Colts and his previous teammates, which he also told Adams, even though he is now on a different club.
