The Detroit Lions face a tough decision regarding one of their key internal free agents, defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike, as they aim to improve their defense for 2025. While the Lions’ defense showed resilience despite numerous injuries in 2024, those injuries ultimately hindered their playoff run. As they enter the offseason, a primary focus will be improving their defense, which includes potentially re-signing some of their own free agents.
Onwuzurike, who played in all 16 games this season, has quietly been effective, posting 28 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. He recorded 45 quarterback pressures during the regular season and earned a top-25 overall PFF grade among defensive tackles. His presence is especially crucial with the uncertainty surrounding Alim McNeill’s recovery from a torn ACL, making Onwuzurike an essential piece for Detroit’s defensive line depth. Pro Football Focus analyst Dalton Wasserman highlighted Onwuzurike as the Lions’ most important free agent to retain.
With McNeill’s injury in mind, bringing Onwuzurike back would help shore up the Lions’ defensive line. He led the team’s defensive linemen in snaps (697) and contributed 47 quarterback pressures, offering valuable versatility along the line. His ability to contribute in multiple spots and add pass-rush depth makes re-signing him a priority.
However, keeping Onwuzurike isn’t without its challenges. After battling back issues earlier in his career, Onwuzurike underwent significant surgery that sidelined him for the entire 2022 season, casting doubt on his future. This year, though healthy, he showed steady improvement. Yet, with his injury history, the Lions must weigh whether this season marks his peak performance or if he can continue to develop.
While the Lions have a history of rewarding their own players, re-signing Onwuzurike to a lucrative deal could be a gamble due to his injury concerns. If another team offers him more than what Detroit is willing to pay, Onwuzurike may need to take that opportunity. Ultimately, it’s a decision the Lions must approach carefully.
