The Detroit Lions have experienced a whirlwind of events following their postseason exit. After their Super Bowl hopes were dashed by a loss to the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round, significant changes to the coaching staff began. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson left to become the Chicago Bears’ head coach, while defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn departed to join the New York Jets. Kelvin Sheppard was brought in to replace Glenn.

While the Lions still have an opening at offensive coordinator, one candidate is quickly gaining traction. On the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned that John Morton is a strong contender for the role, stating, “I would expect John Morton to be the offensive coordinator in Detroit.”

Morton, 55, has already interviewed for the position and impressed Detroit’s management. Over the past two years, he served as the Denver Broncos’ pass game coordinator, and he was also a senior offensive assistant for the Lions during the 2022 season. Morton has previously worked with teams such as the Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, and New York Jets. Though his only stint as an offensive coordinator came with the Jets in 2017, he is highly regarded for his offensive expertise. During his brief time in Detroit, he made a noticeable impact.

Head coach Dan Campbell expressed high praise for Morton, noting, “Johnny was a superstar for us last year. He contributed in ways that we’ve continued to use. I believe it helped Tanner too, and he’s grown from it.”

If Morton is appointed as offensive coordinator, he’ll inherit a high-performing offense. The Lions ranked second in the NFL in total offense (409.5 yards per game), passing offense (263.2 yards per game), sixth in rushing (146.4 yards per game), and first in scoring offense (33.2 points per game).

Although the search is ongoing, Morton is now a leading candidate to take on the OC role in Detroit.
