Lions fans were understandably upset when Ben Johnson left to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears, especially so soon after Detroit’s season-ending loss.

As the discussion shifted, attention turned to other Lions coaches who might join Johnson in Chicago. Wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El and assistant quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett made the move.

Similar to former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn’s move to head coach of the New York Jets, it’s likely Johnson will target former Lions players for his new roster, particularly free agents. Here are three Detroit free agents who could follow Johnson to Chicago:

3. OT Dan Skipper

Skipper is a versatile and well-liked role player, making him a valuable asset in the locker room. However, with the Lions likely focusing on reshaping their offensive line, Skipper could be replaced as the team’s sixth lineman or third tackle. Given his strong fit in a team culture, the Bears, under Johnson’s leadership, may see Skipper as a solid addition to their offensive line depth.

2. WR Tim Patrick

Patrick provided the Lions with solid play, stepping in to replace Josh Reynolds, with 33 catches for 394 yards and three touchdowns. However, at 32, he may not be a long-term fit for the Lions, who might seek a younger option for their receiving corps. The Bears, possibly losing Keenan Allen, might be interested in adding Patrick to bolster their wide receiver depth and bring over a piece of Detroit’s offensive mindset.

1. OG Kevin Zeitler

The Lions will likely prioritize re-signing Zeitler after his stellar 2024 season, but competition for him will be fierce. The Bears, with cap space to spare, could be a strong suitor. Despite solid guard play from Teven Jenkins and Matt Pryor, the Bears might pursue Zeitler to further strengthen their offensive line, a move that would align with Johnson’s emphasis on a strong offensive front.
