As the 2025 NFL Draft quickly approaches, analysts are putting the finishing touches on their final mock projections. ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Field Yates recently teamed up for a three-round mock draft, alternating selections throughout.
Kiper handled the Detroit Lions’ picks in this version and made a strong case for reinforcing the team’s defense.
At No. 28 overall, Kiper slotted Georgia defensive end Mykel Williams to Detroit. The Lions have been searching for a dynamic edge rusher to line up opposite Aidan Hutchinson, and Williams could be the answer.
Kiper emphasized the fit: “Detroit’s pass rush needs a boost on the other side of Hutchinson. Williams brings burst and untapped potential, giving new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard a versatile weapon.”
With their second-round choice at No. 60, Kiper projected the Lions would fortify their offensive front by drafting Purdue’s Marcus Mbow. Mbow, who has experience at both right guard and right tackle, is expected to compete for a starting job.
“There’s an opportunity at right guard in Detroit,” Kiper said. “Mbow, who played tackle recently but started at right guard in 2022, could challenge Kayode Awosika and Christian Mahogany for that role.”
In the third round, Kiper selected Clemson linebacker Barrett Carter at pick No. 102. Given recent injuries at the position and Alex Anzalone’s contract nearing its end, Detroit could use young talent to strengthen its linebacking corps.
Kiper considered another edge rusher, David Walker from Central Arkansas, but opted to diversify. “I really think Walker could be an early Day 3 pick, but since the Lions already addressed edge in Round 1, Carter makes sense here,” Kiper explained. “He’s a versatile defender with 77 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 9 pass breakups last year.”
