As the 2025 NFL Draft draws closer, draft experts are releasing their latest predictions. In a recent collaboration, ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Field Yates unveiled a three-round mock draft where they alternated picks.
Mel Kiper made the selections for the Detroit Lions and focused heavily on upgrading the team’s defensive and offensive lines.
With the 28th overall pick, Kiper had Detroit targeting Georgia pass rusher Mykel Williams. The Lions have been aiming to add a high-impact edge defender to play opposite star Aidan Hutchinson, and Williams could fill that role effectively.
Kiper highlighted the value of the pick: “Williams offers explosiveness and upside, which could be a valuable asset for new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. He’s exactly what the Lions need to elevate their pass rush.”
In Round 2, with pick No. 60, Detroit is projected to go after offensive lineman Marcus Mbow from Purdue. Mbow has experience at multiple positions on the line and could immediately compete for a starting role.
“There’s a real chance at right guard for someone to step in,” Kiper noted. “Mbow has played tackle recently but has a solid background at guard, giving him a shot to challenge current contenders for the job.”
At pick No. 102 in the third round, Kiper chose Clemson linebacker Barrett Carter. Injuries have taken a toll on the position, and with Alex Anzalone’s deal nearing its expiration, the Lions could benefit from adding depth and youth.
Though Kiper considered taking Central Arkansas edge rusher David Walker here, he ultimately opted for Carter, citing the need for balance. “Walker is a solid early Day 3 candidate, but since Detroit already went edge in Round 1, Carter fits better. He’s a versatile playmaker who racked up 77 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 9 pass breakups last season.”
