College football is lamenting the death of a former LSU player who died much too young. Devonta Lee, a former wide receiver for the Tigers, died at the age of 27 after suffering from bone cancer.
Lee’s mother, Lacresia Brown, announced the news and described her son as a fighter who never lost his passion for football.
Lee played for LSU from 2019 to 2021, participating in several games throughout that time. He ended his Tigers career with 11 receptions for 112 yards and one score before moving to Louisiana Tech to complete his collegiate career.
Lee had already established a reputation in Louisiana football community by the time he entered college.
He was a standout at Amite High School, helping the team win the 2A state championship in 2018 and being named the No. 6 overall prospect in Louisiana in the 2019 class.
Both LSU and Louisiana Tech expressed their condolences on social media when news of his death broke.
According to WDSU, the day before he died, he told everyone he loved them. He didn’t appreciate that it returned, since he was attempting to heal, to get back out there.
Lee was remembered by those who knew him not only as a gifted player, but also as someone who battled even when the struggle got far larger than football.
That’s what kept him here, those kinds of moments, the way he worked out, the way he fought, he fought to the end, his mother told us. He always put God first; He attended church every Sunday.
