The 2025 NCAA season did not go as Garrett Nussmeier and the LSU Tigers had hoped. Especially after the quarterback opted to return for another year in the hopes of winning a national championship. As he made his way into the NFL, Nussmeier felt compelled to apologize to the institution and its supporters.
“I’m sorry that we couldn’t meet those expectations,” Nussmeier told reporters during a press conference on Monday. “It was a difficult year. Lot of hardship. Looking back, it was regrettable, but it will help me become a better player. “
Nussmeier has moved on to the NFL Draft, with Lane Kiffin taking over and Arizona State transfer QB Sam Leavitt joining the team. It’s a new day in Baton Rouge, one that Nussmeier will not live to witness.
Nussmeier’s stats in 2025.
Nussmeier played in nine games during an injury-plagued college football season in his senior year. In 2025, the former four-star recruit from Texas passed for 1,927 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions for LSU.
The Tigers ended the season with a 7-6 record in the NCAA (3-5 SEC), culminating with a loss to the Houston Cougars in the Kinder’s Texas Bowl (Nussmeier did not play). It was a season unlike any other.
Drama was the name of the game, with wave-making moments such as Brian Kelly’s resignation and Kiffin’s escape from Ole Miss and entrance in LSU. The Tigers are poised for another exciting season, with him directing the team from the sidelines.
Nussmeier’s draft stock.
With one month until the 2026 Draft, Nussmeier is receiving attention across the league. He may not be a finished product in this year’s quarterback class, but he possesses the qualities to be an NFL starter. Nussmeier is most likely to be picked by a team that can afford to give him some time to adjust, rather than one that requires a Day 1 starting quarterback.
