No. 1 prospect Tyran Stokes has committed to Kansas over Kentucky, and insider Jeff Goodman took the opportunity to slam Mark Pope’s Wildcats.

The Kansas Jayhawks and Kentucky Wildcats had a rollercoaster ride while waiting for Tyran Stokes, the No. 1 player in the 2026 class, to make their decision. Stokes eventually chose Kansas, prompting Kentucky to seek other ways to strengthen its squad.

Mark Pope and Kentucky have failed to recruit and transfer players. After Stokes’ dedication, college basketball expert Jeff Goodman attacked Pope’s inability to attract talent.

The Wildcats have been seeking for solutions after a dismal 2025 season in which they were seeded No. 7 and defeated in the second round of March Madness.

Unfortunately, they have fallen short in numerous areas. They were hoping that Stokes would bring them luck, but he shattered their hopes, just like the others. Goodman spoke candidly about the reality of Kentucky: They need more talent, and today is a sad day for the Wildcats.

“Big Blue Nation will be breathing down Mark Pope’s neck,” according to Goodman. “I’m not saying it was going to work [if Stokes committed], but at the very least, if he had Tyran Stokes, the preseason would have received much more publicity, right? ” The preseason would have been much more fascinating with the No. 1 player in the nation, which Tyran Stokes is—a skilled forward who can do it all,” according to Goodman.

“He has some red flags. We know that his body language sometimes irritates players, colleagues, coaches, and referees, so I’m not sure if it would have worked. I honestly don’t think Mark Pope and Tyran Stokes would have worked well together. However, once again, if you are a Kentucky supporter who looks at this squad right now, it is quite disappointing. They require a man. And Tyran Stokes is a man. And that’s the thing: I’d rather be very skilled [with red flags] than not talented enough and at least take a chance with that ability, saying something like, “Let’s see what we can do. ” Let’s see,’

“Maybe Mo Williams, their new assistant coach, [could have] controlled Tyran Stokes. Perhaps that is what would have happened here, with Mark Pope placing Mo in charge of Tyran Stokes since Mo played in the NBA for a long time and is likely less optimistic than Pope. Perhaps that thing would have worked. I do not know.

““But if I’m a Kentucky fan, I’m depressed today.”

Kentucky’s future looks dismal, as the school is only adding one freshman and three transfers for the upcoming season. Their recruiting class is ranked 61st in 247Sports’ recruiting rankings. Stokes would have worked wonders for their recruitment class, boosting it from terrible for a blueblood program to a highly respectable class that includes the best high school player in the country.

Goodman said that Pope’s coaching style and character may not have been a good fit for Stokes. But Kentucky needs to acquire talent to rejoin the blueblood programs. Despite any concerns about the fit, Stokes is a very talented player the Wildcats might use. He is merely a sign of the situation that is developing at Pope’s Kentucky.

Pope has made some impact guards via the transfer portal. Alex Wilkins of Furman will play a key role alongside Zoom Diallo of the University of Washington.

Wilkins averaged 17. 8 points and 4. 7 assists as a rookie, demonstrating that he can compete with the greatest players in college basketball as Furman battled UConn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Diallo is also capable of scoring the ball at a high level. He finished the season with 21+ points in four of his final five games. Diallo and Wilkins will be one of the most intriguing new backcourts to watch next season.

As for where Kentucky goes from here, Goodman named Allen Graves as a “perfect” player to pursue, while also encouraging Pope to explore international possibilities.

The Wildcats possess ability, although significantly less than some of the Wildcat teams coached by John Calipari. Pope will have to overcome many of his difficult recruiting losses — Syracuse’s Donnie Freeman and BYU’s Robert Wright III — in the following season as he attempts to prove some experts wrong. There are a few impact players remaining in the portal who are still in the draft (including Milan Momcilovic, whom Goodman described as a good fit), so Pope may attempt to pivot there for some last-minute additions.
