According to sources, SU Tigers football coach Lane Kiffin may face action from the SEC for his recent slander campaign in Vanity Fair against the Ole Miss Rebels and the University of Mississippi. Kiffin openly criticized Oxford, Mississippi, for creating a hostile and racist campus environment.
According to Matt Hayes of USA Today, “officials at Ole Miss and the SEC have discussed a possible reprimand for new LSU coach Lane Kiffin for statements he made in a recent Vanity Fair magazine interview, according to two people close to the situation. ” Kiffin, however, maintains that he did not make racially insensitive remarks about the differences in recruiting between Ole Miss, where he coached from 2020-2025, and LSU.
According to Kiffin in response to USA Today’s Vanity Fair profile, “People don’t read what I really stated in the piece. I said, “A parent stated. ” “I am not saying this as my personal opinion. “
Kiffin was never questioned on the subject by Vanity Fair writer Chris Smith. The new LSU head coach gave it without prompting, and his new assistant, fellow former Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron, confirmed the sentiment just before being hired in Baton Rouge.
Tracey Ivey-Muhammad, a Suwanee, Georgia native and the mother of former Ole Miss defensive lineman Jared Ivey, who transferred from the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and played for the Rebels from 2022 to 2024, went on the record to publicly dispute Kiffin’s allegations. Kiffin allegedly spoke with her only once during her son’s three seasons with the squad. No one has backed Kiffin’s allegations thus
far.
Lane Kiffin is already creating unnecessary distractions in LSU.
In his first offseason with the Tigers, Kiffin is already creating unneeded problems. It’s likely not a wise decision, given the demand for success in Louisiana for a program that has recently been severely damaged by Brian Kelly’s contract termination.
Since his comments, the NAACP has demanded a boycott of institutions in almost every SEC state. This is a probable reason for Kiffin to face punishment.
LSU has neither time nor money to squander, and Kiffin’s antics are currently possibly damaging to the conference, his employer, and himself. If Kiffin does not win on the field, he will have squandered a sizable NIL/revenue-share investment on his rookie roster. Who knows how long it will be until he is in the hot seat? His leash, ironically, would have been longer at Ole Miss.
Kiffin must sleep in the bed he has made in the Bayou. He could’ve gotten off to a better start in the controversy department, largely by not pursuing it.
