Texas A&M has received a commitment from Mark Matthews, a five-star offensive tackle from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after weeks of building optimism for the maroon and white. The Aggies were able to beat out the hometown Miami Hurricanes for Matthews, the nation’s greatest offensive lineman whom the team has been pursuing for years.
That is not to say that Miami did not make this an intriguing race in recent days. The Hurricanes have done everything possible to persuade Matthews to stay in South Florida, and they will not stop now that he has made a verbal commitment to the Aggies. However, Adam Cushing and Mike Elko’s performance on the recruiting path this year has given this promise true staying power.
It is not an exaggeration to claim that this transforms the recruitment scene across the country for the next class. Matthews was a local Hurricanes prospect who ranked among the top three players in the country, playing in a position where Mario Cristobal also specializes, at a time when the Hurricanes were competing for the national championship. Imagine defeating prime Nick Saban for a five-star defensive back who just happened to be a resident of Tuscaloosa—that’s what we’re talking about here.
This is a flex that every squad in the country will take notice of, to put it another way. This is not something that occurs every year; rather, a national championship-level program on the rise announces itself in grand style.
Texas A&M snatches five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews from Miami Hurricanes
Matthews is the fourth offensive line commitment for Texas A&M this cycle, joining fellow five-star Kennedy Brown, who pledged to the Aggies in late April, as well as DeMarrion Johnson (who the Longhorns have been working hard to flip) and Kaeden Scott.
That is already a high-level class, but the Aggies are not finished. Texas A&M is still in the running for high-level prospects such as Albert Simien and Ismael Camara, both five-star recruits, among others. Simien will be a challenging matchup against the in-state LSU Tigers, and you can expect the Longhorns to do all possible to capture Camara, but Texas A&M has done an excellent job in both of these recruitments.
Matthews is the country’s finest tackle for a reason: he’s the cycle’s biggest prize. Every program in the country was falling over themselves for a chance to have a seat at the table, but the Aggies outpaced the competition and crossed the finish line first. Mike Elko has now resolved any concerns about his recruiting skills, which was the main source of dissatisfaction among supporters when he took over the program. Things are trending up significantly.
The Aggies solidified their hold on the No. 1 overall class with this dedication, and they are now in a position where it appears impossible for any of their rivals to knock them off the top. The Aggies are on course for a record-breaking finish, and it appears that no one can stop them. Their average commit rating is currently significantly higher than anybody else, and it is constantly improving.
Mike Elko and his staff are creating something unique in College Station. Matthews’ presence in this group lends credibility to the claim. Additions like this will make the offensive front a power to be reckoned with in Aggieland for years to come.
