Following the Providence Bruins’ recent first-round defeat, everyone is discussing a developmental issue within the Boston Bruins system. While some people are urging for change at the AHL level, others question if this is symptomatic of a larger issue throughout the front office. It most likely falls in the middle in terms of responsibility for Providence failing to win a series.

The AHL squad may need to make some modifications after recent playoff setbacks, but the whole club is experiencing difficulties in player development. Mason Lohrei is one player who has failed to live up to the Bruins’ expectations, and Don Sweeney’s recent remarks regarding it are the most damning indication of how the front office views development, according to Jack Studley on X, formerly Twitter

.

“I don’t believe [his development] has been hindered in any manner. I believe that Mason’s ability to play on the right side alongside Hampus in that situation demonstrated a great deal about his capabilities. There are still variances. He’s still a young player in that role. “
Don Sweeney

The issue with Sweeney’s response to Lohrei’s growth is that he is a 25-year-old defender in his fourth professional season. He is nine games short of 200 in his NHL career, and if he has yet to resolve his defensive issues, it is difficult to picture how he will. If Sweeney is still expecting him to develop, he might be bitterly wrong.

“When you compare year over year, in terms of where he was defensively last year in our lineup to what he was able to achieve this year, while yet doing some of the things offensively that we all really like. “

Don Sweeney

Sweeney’s claim that he has improved defensively is a little exaggerated. Lohrei experienced two tough healthy scratch instances this season, one at the start of the regular season and the other in the first round of the playoffs. Sturm is constructing his squad from the defense out, and he does not believe Lohrei should be included in the lineup.

“[Sturm] does not detest Mason in the same way that he does Henri. ” It’s simply night by night, and he’s attempting to create the best squad possible. “

Don Sweeney

If Lohrei is unable to break Sturm’s best lineup after four seasons as a former second-round pick, which includes a career AHLer, someone with a torn MCL, and defensemen Henri Jokiharju and Jordan Harris who barely played all season, the Bruins may have a Lohrei problem.

If Sweeney is saying all of this to boost Lohrei’s trade worth, kudos to him. However, if the general manager genuinely believes Lohrei is still in his growth window, he may be more out of touch than we imagined.
