In a major recruiting triumph, the University of Kentucky has landed a verbal pledge from highly touted 2026 quarterback Matt Ponatoski. The Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller standout revealed his commitment on Sunday, choosing the Wildcats over prominent programs like Alabama, Oregon, and Arkansas.
Ponatoski, who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 190 pounds, is one of the top two-sport athletes in the nation. He plans to compete in both football and baseball for Kentucky, further boosting the school’s reputation across multiple sports.
The talented athlete has built an impressive résumé, recently earning the prestigious Gatorade Ohio Player of the Year award in both football and baseball—a rare feat previously accomplished by only a select few, such as Joe Mauer and Randy Moss.
On the gridiron, Ponatoski’s junior campaign was dominant. He threw for more than 4,000 yards with 56 touchdown passes against only three interceptions, leading Moeller to a 14-win season and a spot in the Division I state finals. His strong arm, decision-making, and athleticism have made him one of the most coveted quarterbacks in his class.
His excellence isn’t limited to the football field. On the baseball diamond, Ponatoski hit for a .437 average, driving in 29 runs and scoring 22 himself. He also stole 10 bases and notched two saves as a pitcher, contributing to his team’s top seeding in the Ohio state playoffs.
By securing Ponatoski’s commitment, Kentucky not only adds a dynamic quarterback to its future roster but also signals a growing presence in recruiting within Ohio and nationwide. The Wildcats continue to build momentum under head coach Mark Stoops, and Ponatoski’s dual-sport talent is a significant addition to their athletic program.
