Alex Anzalone Ignites Contract Controversy with Telling Social Media Activity

As training camp looms for the Detroit Lions, veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone is turning up the heat on his unresolved contract situation—without saying a word.

While Lions rookies have already reported and veterans are set to arrive Saturday, all eyes are now shifting to potential holdouts or contract standoffs. Amid looming extensions for other core players, Anzalone’s status has flown somewhat under the radar—until now.

Though his absence from voluntary OTAs raised few alarms, the fact that he’s entering the final year of his deal adds new tension. The Lions are opening camp early due to their appearance in the Hall of Fame Game, so speculation is mounting about whether Anzalone will actually report on time.

Throughout the offseason, Anzalone has used social media to subtly—but consistently—signal frustration with his contract situation. While there have been no public reports of negotiations, the silence might be louder than words—possibly indicating that talks have either stalled or never started.

A Proven Asset With Something to Prove

There’s no question about Anzalone’s value to the Lions defense. When he missed time last season, the unit took a noticeable dip. Statistically, he ranks among the NFL’s most impactful linebackers in recent years. On Friday, Pride of Detroit’s Al Karsten highlighted a key stat: Anzalone produced 17 “splash plays” (sacks, QB hits, TFLs, INTs, forced fumbles) last season—ranking third on the team.

More eye-opening: Over the last three seasons, Anzalone has racked up 63 splash plays—10th most among all NFL defenders—despite playing eight fewer games than superstar Fred Warner, who’s just one spot ahead. Yet Anzalone’s average annual salary is just $6.1 million, the lowest among the top 10 on that list.

His reaction? A pointed retweet of the stat—silent but strong. It spoke volumes: “I’ve earned more than I’m getting.”

Will Frustration Lead to a Holdout?

The message from Anzalone is crystal clear: He wants to get paid—commensurate with his production and leadership. Whether his frustration stems from a lack of meaningful talks or an underwhelming offer, it’s clear that patience is wearing thin.

Now, the question becomes urgent: Will he report to camp on time, or will this contract dispute boil over into a full-blown holdout? With mandatory practices just days away, the Lions—and their fans—won’t have to wait long to find out.
