Lions Add Former SEC RB After Waiving Local Undrafted Rookie
The Detroit Lions continue to bolster their running back depth chart despite already having a strong one-two punch in Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. While those two carried most of the offensive load on the ground last season, Detroit’s front office isn’t standing pat. On Friday, the Lions signed a new running back to compete in training camp — Jabari Small, a second-year back who previously played for the Tennessee Titans after a successful college career at the University of Tennessee.
Detroit Picks Up Jabari Small Following Tyus Release
Just a day earlier, the Lions parted ways with undrafted free agent Anthony Tyus III. The Michigan native was released due to a non-football-related medical issue, which freed up a roster spot. Wasting no time, Detroit brought in Jabari Small to fill the vacancy and join the team ahead of camp.
Small, who didn’t log any snaps during his rookie year in Tennessee, had an impressive college résumé in the SEC. Over 45 games with the Volunteers, he amassed 2,369 yards from scrimmage on 451 touches and found the end zone 26 times.
While it’s an uphill battle for Small to secure a place on the final 53-man roster — especially with all four primary running backs from last season returning — this signing gives him a chance to showcase his talent in front of the Lions’ coaching staff. Even if he doesn’t stick in Detroit, the opportunity to participate in an NFL training camp could lead to other chances down the line.
For now, Small will be eager to make his mark and show he belongs in the league.
