Liverpool has finalized the British record acquisition of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United after reaching an agreement valued at approximately $169 million (£125 million) between the clubs over the weekend.

Isak will don the number nine shirt at Liverpool, previously worn by Darwin Nunez, who transferred to the Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal earlier this summer. Isak initially donned the number 19 at Real Sociedad before changing to 14 at Newcastle.

The Swedish forward’s arrival in Merseyside concludes months of rumors regarding Isak’s future. The 25-year-old had to push hard to secure a transfer from Newcastle, with club officials ultimately conceding after initially preventing his departure.

Isak effectively stopped working at St James’ Park and has achieved what he desired. He hasn’t participated in matches for Newcastle since the previous season and has had to practice separately from the rest of Eddie Howe’s team in recent weeks.

The athlete openly criticized the team on social media, stating that commitments were violated concerning his future. This resulted in Newcastle releasing a counter-statement refuting the claims, yet Isak ultimately secured the transfer he desired.

Isak has signed a six-year deal with Liverpool. The agreement surpasses all previous deals involving an English club, overshadowing the transfer of Florian Wirtz — valued at up to $157 million (£116 million) — which was finalized earlier this summer
