The Detroit Lions are dealing with a few late injury concerns as they prepare for Sunday’s divisional matchup against the Chicago Bears.
All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph was a surprise addition to the team’s injury report, listed as questionable due to a knee issue. Joseph had practiced fully on both Wednesday and Thursday, but his workload was scaled back on Friday, raising questions about his availability. Earlier in training camp, the Lions had already limited Joseph for several weeks while managing the same injury. His return to the field, even in a reduced role, is seen as a positive step, though the team has not confirmed whether he will suit up this weekend.
Detroit is also monitoring the status of Taylor Decker, who is battling a shoulder problem. Unlike Joseph, Decker did not participate in any practices this week. While Decker expressed his desire to play, and offensive coordinator John Morton suggested the team was preparing as if he would, head coach Dan Campbell emphasized that the decision will ultimately hinge on protecting Decker’s health over the course of the full season. Rookie Giovanni Manu has been working with the first-team offense in Decker’s spot and would be in line for his first NFL snaps if Decker is sidelined.
The Lions have already ruled out linebacker Trevor Nowaske (elbow), who did not practice in Week 1 and remained limited during preparations for the Bears. Meanwhile, running back Sione Vaki (hamstring) is listed as doubtful, continuing to deal with lingering issues that have hampered him since camp. Vaki’s absence would also affect Detroit’s special teams, as he was expected to handle kick return duties when healthy.
On the other side, the Bears announced that cornerback Kyler Gordon will miss the contest, while defensive lineman Grady Jarrett is questionable. Wide receiver Jahdae Walker is doubtful to play, but the team will get a boost with the expected season debut of cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who has been recovering from calf and groin injuries.
