Christian Mahogany will be sidelined until at least December after breaking a bone in his left leg, and the Detroit Lions have now placed their starting left guard on injured reserve.

The injury occurred in the fourth quarter of Detroit’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Although initially reported as a knee issue during the game, Mahogany was later seen on crutches with his leg secured in a walking boot following Sunday’s matchup.

With Mahogany out, the Lions are evaluating multiple options to fill the vacancy at left guard. Kayode Awosika, a versatile veteran, is expected to get the first crack at the starting role. However, Trystan Colon is also under consideration, as is the possibility of shifting Graham Glasgow from center to guard to stabilize the offensive line.

Detroit’s offense has been struggling to find rhythm — particularly in big-play production, third-down conversions, and rushing efficiency. Against Minnesota, the unit managed just 65 rushing yards on 20 carries, while Jared Goff endured five sacks and was hit 10 additional times.

To address roster depth, the Lions moved quickly to fill Mahogany’s spot by promoting linebacker Ty Summers from the practice squad. Summers has been alternating between the active roster and practice unit, primarily contributing on special teams amid injuries to Zach Cunningham (on IR) and Malcolm Rodriguez, who is still recovering from an ACL tear suffered last November.

Rodriguez’s 21-day return window opened last week, but until he’s game-ready, Summers will likely continue to handle special teams duties.

Additionally, Detroit bolstered its depth up front by signing three offensive linemen — Jack Conley, Chris Hubbard, and Netane Muti — to the practice squad. The move comes as Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell both missed Wednesday’s practice, leaving the team short-handed at key positions during preparations for Week 10.
