The Detroit Lions continue to search for hidden gems in the UFL, adding another intriguing playmaker ahead of training camp.
According to UFL insider James Larsen, Detroit has signed wide receiver Lawrence Keys III, making him the fourth UFL receiver added by the Lions this week. The move comes shortly after the team waived wide receiver Kyre Duplessis, creating an open roster spot.
Lawrence Keys III Brings Dynamic Playmaking Ability
Keys spent the last two seasons with the Houston Gamblers and emerged as one of the UFL’s most versatile offensive weapons during the 2026 season.
The former Tulane standout finished second in the league in all-purpose yards, showcasing his value as both a receiver and return specialist. He recorded 349 receiving yards while adding 518 kick return yards and 134 punt return yards.
His ability to impact games in multiple ways could make him a valuable addition for a Lions team seeking to replace some of the special teams production lost following Kalif Raymond’s departure.
Lions Continue Adding UFL Talent
Before joining the UFL, Keys signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2024. However, a training camp leg injury cut short his opportunity after he appeared in one preseason game and hauled in a 13-yard reception.
Keys joins fellow UFL receivers Tay Martin, Tarik Black, and Lucky Jackson as recent additions to Detroit’s roster.
The Lions have clearly made the UFL a priority scouting pipeline as they search for depth and developmental talent.
Can Keys Earn a Spot on Detroit’s Roster?
Making the final roster will be a challenge for Keys, as Detroit’s wide receiver group is led by stars Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.
Still, his proven return skills could help him separate himself from other depth receivers when training camp competition begins.
Special teams value often plays a significant role in roster decisions, and Keys’ ability to contribute as both a kick and punt returner could strengthen his case.
Why the Signing Matters
The Lions continue to demonstrate their commitment to exploring every avenue for roster improvement. While much of the spotlight remains on Detroit’s established stars, Lawrence Keys III is quickly becoming one of the more intriguing under-the-radar players to watch heading into training camp.
If his UFL production translates to the NFL level, the Lions may have found another valuable contributor in their ongoing search for hidden talent.
