The Detroit Lions rediscovered their rhythm in dominant fashion — and their postgame remarks made it clear that John Morton’s absence on the headset didn’t go unnoticed.
After several underwhelming offensive showings, head coach Dan Campbell made a decisive midseason change reminiscent of his 2021 move when he stripped Anthony Lynn of play-calling duties. This time, he acted even faster — reclaiming control of the offense from offensive coordinator John Morton just nine games into the season.
The results were immediate. Detroit erupted for 44 points in a blowout win over the Washington Commanders. Although Washington’s defense has struggled all season, the energy and execution from the Lions suggested that players had been waiting for this shift — and that Campbell’s leadership brought new life to the unit.
Goff and Williams Praise Campbell’s Offensive Command
Quarterback Jared Goff delivered one of his best performances of the year, completing 25 of 33 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns before giving way to backup Kyle Allen late in the game. Speaking to The Detroit News’ Nolan Bianchi, Goff was quick to credit his head coach:
“Dan did a great job getting plays in, changing tempo, and managing personnel,” Goff said.
The veteran quarterback not only achieved his first 300-yard game since Week 2 but also logged his second-highest touchdown total of the season — nearly 100 yards more than his season average.
Wide receiver Jameson Williams, who finally broke out with six catches for 119 yards and a touchdown, also enjoyed the change in approach. In his postgame comments to NFL.com, Williams praised Campbell while joking about his sideline look:
“Shout-out to Dan and how he managed the game. It was kind of funny seeing him out there with glasses — definitely a different look.”
For Williams, who has struggled for consistency this year despite signing a lucrative extension, the performance could mark a turning point.
Campbell’s Classy Response to Morton Situation
Even after reclaiming play-calling duties, Campbell avoided publicly criticizing Morton. Instead, he emphasized Morton’s professionalism and commitment to the team.
“John’s all about the team,” Campbell told ESPN. “He just wants to win, help however he can, and he was outstanding today. The guy grinds and gives you everything possible to prepare.”
Lions Offense Posts Season-Best Numbers
Detroit’s offensive statistics underscored the transformation. The Lions recorded 30 first downs, converted 50% on third down (5-of-10), went 2-for-2 on fourth down, and piled up 546 total yards without a turnover or a single punt. They scored on eight drives, nearly matching their total output from the previous two weeks combined (48 points).
In terms of yards per play, Detroit jumped from their lowest mark of the season (3.78 vs. Green Bay) to their second-highest (8.03) against Washington — an astonishing one-week turnaround.

Given how events unfolded with Anthony Lynn after a similar demotion, it’s becoming increasingly unlikely that John Morton will retain his offensive coordinator title beyond this season — no matter how Detroit’s final stretch plays out.
