The Detroit Lions are still firmly in the NFC playoff race and remain contenders for another NFC North title, but a growing concern is starting to draw national attention. With offensive coordinator John Morton no longer handling play-calling duties, head coach Dan Campbell has taken over the offensive operation — and ESPN’s Mike Greenberg believes that may be creating a new problem for Detroit.
Dan Campbell’s Expanded Role Could Be Hurting Game Management
Campbell has stepped in as the Lions’ play-caller over the past three games, leading the team to a 2-1 record in that stretch. While the offense has looked improved and more aggressive, Greenberg pointed out that Campbell may now be juggling too many responsibilities during games.
According to Greenberg, Detroit’s in-game decision-making and timeout management have taken noticeable hits since Campbell started calling plays. Campbell has previously explained how focused he must be when managing the offense, and Greenberg believes that laser-focus may be taking away from other crucial head-coaching duties.
Detroit’s 34-27 comeback win over the New York Giants highlighted that concern.
Miscommunication Late vs. Giants Supports Greenberg’s Take
Late in the fourth quarter, the Lions were driving to tie the game. Jared Goff spiked the ball to stop the clock — but the sideline simultaneously burned a timeout. It resulted in Detroit wasting a timeout with the clock already stopped.
After the game, Campbell described the moment as a communication breakdown between him and the players, noting that there were issues with the headset communication.
Campbell explained:
“I don’t know what happened with that to be honest with you. I just know I couldn’t get to Jared Goff. It was one of those oddball deals where thank God it didn’t cost us.”
The mistake didn’t change the outcome, but it highlighted how easily a game-management issue could hurt the Lions in a critical moment.
Should the Lions Bring in a Game Management Consultant?
While Campbell is unlikely to give up his play-calling role — especially with the offense performing well — analysts believe Detroit may benefit from adding support. A game-management consultant or additional sideline assistance could help Campbell avoid costly errors as the season becomes more intense.
Detroit is still winning, but the pressure will increase as the playoff race tightens. If the Lions want to avoid a preventable mistake in a crucial matchup, finding a way to support Campbell’s dual responsibilities may be essential.
