The Pittsburgh Steelers brought in former Detroit Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker for a tryout on Tuesday, per the NFL transaction wire, as the team continues evaluating roster depth ahead of its next matchup.
Hooker, who was selected by the Lions in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, was released by Detroit prior to the start of the season. He later joined the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad, but that stint ended when he was waived on November 4.
With two open practice squad spots, Pittsburgh could consider adding Hooker as a developmental quarterback while also gaining familiarity with concepts from Detroit’s offensive system.
Hendon Hooker’s College Career and NFL Experience
Before entering the NFL, Hooker starred at Virginia Tech before transferring to Tennessee, where he became one of the SEC’s top quarterbacks. His breakout season with the Volunteers significantly elevated his draft stock and showcased his ability as a dual-threat passer.
In the NFL, Hooker has appeared in three career games, completing six of nine passes for 62 yards.
Steelers Host Multiple Players at Tuesday Tryouts
Hooker was one of several players brought in by the Steelers. Quarterback Jack Plummer, a former standout at Louisville, also participated in the workout.
Pittsburgh additionally evaluated players at multiple positions, including:
Tight Ends: J.J. Galbreath, Caleb Granger
Running Backs: Tre Stewart, Jordan Waters, Ian Stewart
Wide Receivers: Johnny Johnson, Chris Tyree, Brandon Smith
Galbreath is already familiar with the organization, having spent time with the Steelers during training camp and briefly on the practice squad earlier this season.
As the Steelers continue adjusting their roster, this latest round of tryouts highlights the team’s focus on depth and flexibility heading into a critical stretch of the NFL season.
