Detroit Lions tight ends coach Tyler Roehl will wrap up his time with the organization following the regular-season finale, after which he’ll be returning to the college football world for a role that aligns closely with his long-term ambitions.
Roehl has accepted the offensive coordinator position at Iowa State, bringing him back to a program that holds personal and professional significance for both him and his family.
This decision goes beyond a routine career change. For Roehl, it represents a return to a role he has always felt drawn toward—one that reflects his passion, identity, and coaching philosophy.
A Desire to Be the One Calling the Shots
Roehl has been open about what motivated the move. His goal has always been to run an offense and take control of play-calling responsibilities.
“This opportunity is incredibly meaningful to me,” Roehl explained in comments shared by Lions OnSI. “Calling plays is what I’ve always wanted to do.
I spent years doing that at North Dakota State, and now I get that chance again at a place I know well, working with coach Jimmy Rogers in Ames—somewhere my family and I truly loved.”
At Iowa State, Roehl will regain the hands-on offensive control that energizes him as a coach.
The Right Opportunity at the Right Time
With Jimmy Rogers stepping in as the Cyclones’ head coach and a familiar system in place, Roehl felt the situation naturally fall into alignment.
“Once everything started coming together, it just felt right,” he said. “I trusted my instincts and had long conversations with my wife and kids before making the decision.”
Roehl stressed that choices like this are deeply personal and shaped by more than football alone.
Family Played a Central Role
Ultimately, the move was heavily influenced by family considerations and a sense of belonging.
“People don’t always see what goes on behind the scenes with these decisions,” Roehl said. “My family’s support and their excitement about returning to Ames meant everything to me.”
Their positive memories of the area and desire to return were decisive factors.
A Meaningful Exit for Detroit, a Major Gain for Iowa State
During his time in Detroit, Roehl helped guide and develop one of the NFL’s most effective tight end groups. He departs the Lions organization with appreciation and mutual respect.
Now, he heads back to Ames stepping into a leadership role that fits his strengths—bringing with him experience, teaching ability, and offensive vision.
If his past success is any indication, Iowa State is gaining a coordinator ready to make an immediate impact.
