The Detroit Lions will be without five players for their matchup against the Chicago Bears, the team confirmed on its latest injury report.
Right tackle Penei Sewell, defensive lineman Alim McNeill, offensive lineman Trystan Colon, safety Thomas Harper, and linebacker Alex Anzalone have all been declared inactive for the game.
For Anzalone, who is playing on an expiring contract, this absence could potentially mark the final chapter of his time in Detroit.
Sewell, the former seventh overall draft pick, was sidelined throughout the week of practice.
Head coach Dan Campbell previously expressed doubt about Sewell’s availability, making his absence unsurprising.
Although the Lions are no longer competing for a postseason berth, Campbell emphasized that the season finale still carries real importance, particularly for players fighting for their future in the league.
According to Campbell, many players are essentially auditioning, possibly for the last time.
He explained that he challenges players to give maximum effort, especially when there is no certainty they will receive another opportunity. While a few players — such as Sewell — can be penciled in as future starters, most cannot.
Campbell added that the organization will need to reset, rebuild, and reconnect with the foundational principles that helped shape the team in earlier seasons like 2021 and 2022.
Offensive coordinator John Morton also reflected on his experience over the past eight weeks and how it may influence his role moving forward.
Morton described his responsibilities as largely unchanged, noting his deep involvement in the passing offense.
He spoke highly of the roster, the coaching staff, and the collaborative environment within the organization. Morton said designing passing game plans has been especially enjoyable due to the team’s talent and adaptability.
He added that players quickly grasp new ideas, which makes the process even more rewarding.
Morton concluded by saying he genuinely enjoys every aspect of his job — from preparation and strategy to seeing everything come together on game day.
