he The Denver Broncos are still making changes to their coaching staff during the offseason. The squad is adding yet another member to their coaching staff, one with strong connections to Head Coach Sean Payton, after hiring Doug Belk to coach their defensive backs and Ronald Curry to coach their wide receivers.
John Morton will be the Broncos’ next passing game coordinator, according to Jeremy Fowler, a senior NFL reporter for ESPN. Among the 15 years that Morton has spent coaching in the NFL are a few seasons with Payton in New Orleans. He previously held the same position with Denver in the 2023 and 2024 campaigns.
After being hired as Head Coach of the Chicago Bears, he was given the job of taking over as the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator last year, where he was responsible for filling the shoes of play-calling genius Ben Johnson. Despite his offense averaging more than 30 points a game, he was relieved of his play-calling duties halfway through the season and ultimately sacked when they were unable to reach the playoffs. Morton served as an offensive advisor for the Broncos throughout their postseason campaign.
One of Denver’s main priorities this offseason will be enhancing its offensive production. During free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft, they are anticipated to try to improve that side of the ball in a number of ways. There have only been a few games throughout the previous two seasons where the passing and running games have been clicking on all cylinders, despite occasional sparks from both.
Let’s hope that Payton, Morton, Davis Webb, and the remainder of the offensive coaching staff can identify the winning recipe for 2026. In that area, there is undoubtedly room for improvement. If the Broncos are able to accomplish that, they will undoubtedly be among the candidates for the Super Bowl this upcoming season.
