For Ohio State Buckeyes defensive end Kenyatta Jackson Jr. , returning to Columbus for another season was about more than simply football; it was also about growth.
Jackson said he wanted to play another season to improve his game and learn the intricacies of playing on Ohio State’s defensive line. While wreaking havoc in the backfield has always been a talent, he noted that certain aspects of his game need improvement.
“I wanted to come back and be a more complete player,” Jackson said.
For Jackson, this meant continuing to improve against the run, becoming more comfortable with Ohio State’s defensive plan, and developing consistency on the edge. The additional year has also naturally placed him in a leadership position among the Buckeyes’ defensive linemen.
Kenyatta Jackson Jr. is mentoring Zion Grady.
Returning has provided Jackson with the opportunity to mentor some of the younger players on the defensive line, which is another benefit. That includes sophomore defensive end Zion Grady, who is still evolving in Ohio State’s defensive scheme. Kenyatta emphasized that he has worked with Grady to help him comprehend the Buckeyes’ defense and some of the finer points of competing at the collegiate level.
“I’ve been assisting Zion a lot… teaching him the defense and the small nuances and how we do things here… Just understanding the defense and the little things,” Jackson explained. “Once you have those down, everything slows down for you. “
Ohio State has long worked in this manner, with senior players assisting younger teammates as they adapt to the system. The senior leader knows from personal experience that learning the defense and becoming familiar with daily preparation may be one of the most difficult changes for young defensive linemen.
“That’s how our room is,” Kenyatta remarked. “The older guys help the younger guys, and everyone pushes each other… ” You can learn a lot just by being around the senior guys and seeing how they prepare. It’s more than just what happens on Saturdays. It’s the work you put in during the week: studying film, practicing, and so on.
Now entering another season in Columbus, Jackson stated his focus remains simple.
“I just want to get better,” Jackson said.
It’s a straightforward approach, yet it has shaped his progress during his time with the Buckeyes. As he works toward the objectives that prompted his return, Jackson is also assisting the next generation of Ohio State offensive linemen.
