Christian Izien has served as a chess piece in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defense for the past three seasons. He’s had a major role in special teams and has recorded a lot of snaps in the slot corner and at both safety positions.

Izien should be able to play a variety of positions in Detroit’s secondary, which aligns with the Detroit Lions’ and defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard’s emphasis on player versatility.

With that in mind, what is Izien’s favorite position to play?

Friday, at his first press conference at the Meijer Performance Center, he said that the football field was on it. My favorite location is, frankly, simply being on the football field. I am often moved about a lot by the teams’ tactics, so simply being on the field is not enough.

Izien, who is 25 years old, joined the Bucs as an undrafted free agent from Rutgers in 2023 and had an immediate effect. In his debut season, he played in 17 games with four starts, serving as Tampa Bay’s main slot cornerback and racking up 65 tackles, two interceptions, three tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.

In 2024, he had 10 starts in 14 games, recording an interception, four tackles for loss, and 75 additional tackles. In his second season, he played safer than in the corners. Last season, Izien was more of a backup player at slot corner and safety.

My flexibility was consistently mentioned in the majority of talks I had with clubs during free agency, he stated. I understand how highly regarded that is in this league. Teams will always seek for the ability to play many positions, and on game day, only 53 men may wear.
