Late in the first week of free agency, on Friday, the Detroit Lions were able to locate a solid cornerback option. Following the front office’s acquisition of a former Tennessee Titan who had a brief tenure with the Los Angeles Rams, it seems the slot corner position may be settled.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Roger McCreary is reportedly signing a one-year contract with the Lions. Before his fifth season in the NFL, the 26-year-old defender moves to Detroit.
According to a source, free agent cornerback Roger McCreary has accepted a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions. Prior to being traded to the Rams last season, McCreary made 38 starts for Tennessee.
The Titans selected McCreary in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Tennessee moved him to the slot, where he now plays the majority of the time, after he started out as a starter. Prior to the deadline last season, he was dealt to the Rams, where he played a rotational role in Los Angeles.
The former Auburn Tiger has a wealth of expertise in Detroit. In his league career, he has played in 61 games (38 starts). But after not having a good 2025–26 season, McCreary will now try to turn things around with the Lions after compiling 37 total tackles (23 solo), one sack, and one interception.
It’s possible that Roger McCreary will have a chance to start for the Lions next year. But much of it will depend on if the front office adds more cornerbacks during the offseason. McCreary will have a chance to rebound in Detroit regardless.
