The prospect of Taylor Decker reuniting with the Detroit Lions looks to be ruled out, at least from the player’s viewpoint.
While general manager Brad Holmes has publicly kept the possibility open with a “never say never” attitude, Decker has a very different viewpoint on the situation.
A clean break, in Decker’s opinion.
According to Detroit Football Network’s Justin Rogers, Decker has no intention to return to Detroit for the 2026 season.
In truth, Rogers stated unequivocally that the veteran lineman sees the break as final.
“But, to be clear, despite Holmes’s ‘never say never’ attitude towards Decker playing for the Lions this season, the lineman is slamming it shut,” Pride of Detroit quoted Rogers as saying. “In his mind, the demand for his release was the finalization of a divorce. “
That wording emphasizes how far Decker has moved on, even while the club has kept the option open, however unlikely.
A relationship that ended.
Decker’s exit came after a tough offseason in which the Lions made it clear that he would have to take a substantial pay cut to stay with the club.
The veteran left tackle had planned to return, but then requested his release, putting a stop to a decade-long career in Detroit.
The issue was exacerbated by documented communication gaps between Decker and squad command, which added to an already painful split.
There will be no turning back this time.
For the time, there appears to be no ambiguity.
Holmes may have made the language adaptable, but Decker’s position is clear: the chapter in Detroit is over.
Whether that position softens over time remains unknown. However, as things stand, the notion of Decker joining the Lions this season is not gaining support from the one voice that matters most.
